APPOINTMENT STATUS: 12 month, 50% FTE
ORGANIZATION AND LOCATION: Dept. of Crop and Soil Sciences, Pullman, WA
BASIC FUNCTION: The individual will be responsible for the production of wheat and barley doubled haploid plants for research and breeding purposes. This will include initial laboratory set up, management of the facility and daily operations.
REPORTS TO: Kulvinder S. Gill, Vogel Chair for Wheat Breeding and Genetics
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(E) – Essential Functions: (Primary duties that are intrinsic to the position)
- All aspects of doubled haploid production both with the maize system as well as with microspore culture procedure
- Supervise time slip workers
- Manage the DH lab
- Maintain the facilities website
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge and skill in tissue culture or in doubled haploid production techniques is highly desirable.
- Ability to independently produce doubled haploid plants in wheat and barley, and to explore new techniques related to doubled haploid production.
- Ability to grow plants in greenhouse and growth chambers including tissue culture derived plants.
- Knowledge and the ability to use computer programs commonly used for data collection and document preparation including components of Microsoft Office.

- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; effectively interact with people in a positive manner.
- Ability to promote a safe work environment and to comply with University Policies and Procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
M.S. degree in plant breeding, genetics, molecular biology or related fields. Experience working in tissue culture, genetics, or molecular biology lab. Ability to work independently and efficiently, coordinate and facilitate work activities. Ability to supervise and instruct temporary help and students in laboratory procedures.
SALARY: Commensurate with qualification and experience
WORKCONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed in laboratory, greenhouse, office settings, this includes sitting at a desk, computer terminal. Required to assist in the greenhouse. Requires a valid driver’s license and first aid certificate. Regular exposure to pollen, both wheat and corn is required. Full range of motion of upper extremities and the ability to communicate orally and in writing is required.
