WSU Online Learning FAQ's

Washington State University's Online Learning System is available without charge to all current students, faculty, and staff.  However, given the great variety of system configurations possible throughout the University, login attempts are not always successful.

The following information provides solutions to the most commonly asked questions regarding access to the WSU Online Learning System.

Why can't I access my Online Learning Account?

  • Only current WSU students and employees will have access.  An enabled Network ID/Password is required for access to your Online Learning Account.  For details contact Information Technology Services at (509) 335-3663.
    • If you left WSU and have recently returned as an employee or student your account may have been deactivated.  Contact hrstraining@wsu.edu for assistance.
  • Certain computer configurations are necessary for access and for proper operation of the Online Learning interface.  Activate the Browser Capabilities Check for a thorough diagnostic report at http://browser.skillport.com.

Why won't a selected course load?

Pop-Up Blockers will inhibit the functionality of the Course Manager and must be disabled.  To disable the Pop-Up Blocker in Internet Explorer, open the Tools menu, select Pop-Up Blocker, and then select Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker.

Where are the navigation buttons in my Course Management?

If the navigation buttons do not appear at the bottom of your Course Manager, your computer screen resolution is set too low:

Exit the Course Manager and your SkillPort account
Minimize all programs and perform a single right-click on the desktop
      Select Properties
In the Display Properties window, click on the Settings tab
Set the resolution higher than 800x600

If your computer is part of a Terminal Server environment, the Course Manager will operate very slowly.  However, Books 24x7 will operate normally

Why can't I log into Books 24x7 when I click on a "New Books Notification" link in my email?

If you have accessed the Books 24x7 site through your Online Learning account, you may periodically receive "New Book Notification" through your email.  These notices include links to take you to specific books just added to the library.  You may discover that these links sometimes take you directly to a book and sometimes take you to a login screen.  Here is what is happening:

Accessing the Books 24x7 site through your Online Learning account creates a "cookie" in your system.  Once created, this cookie provides access to the books through your emailed New Books Notifications.

If you have deleted your cookies or cleared your browser cache, the New Books Notifications links will activate a login screen that you will not be able to pass.  It is necessary to reset your cookie by once again logging into your Online Learning account and accessing the Books 24x7 site.  Then the email links will again function properly.

If you wish to stop receiving the New Books Notifications, click on the Settings tab of your Books 24x7 home page and look for New Books Alerts controls.

Can I access WSU Online Learning at any time?

Once a current WSU member meets the above technical criteria, access to Online Learning is allowed from any properly configured computer.  However, all WSU training policies that have applied to other training opportunities also apply to this online environment.  Be sure to review the Online Learning Appropriate Use Reminder.
