Human Resource Services collaborates with Academic Media Services (AMS) and with Washington Educational Conferencing Network (WECN) to provide remote access to training sessions and information.  Unless otherwise indicated*, you may view any of the video streams listed here by clicking on the link following the title.

Note: Videostreams are available in Windows Media Version only.  Also, they are intended as self-selected opportunities for personal/professional development.  Viewing of these video streams will not be reflected on your HRS/SkillSoft training history.  (Currently, the "Cash Handling" course is the only exception and does provide a mechanism by which a record may be produced for your training history if desired.)


 
 
  • Accruals, Allocation Adjustments and Reserve Accounts  4/22/2008
    This course takes an in-depth look at the WSU Accruals and Allocation Adjustment Policy and examines how allocation adjustments interact with reserve accounts. 
  • Award Administration: Part One - The Basics  1/23/2008\
    The first of a four-part series dealing with how to administer an award, this section focuses upon the rules and regulations regarding expenditures imposed by various external and internal entities.
  • Award Administration: Part 2 - The Forms  1/23/2008
    This section of the series provides instruction on completing the SPAR, ETR, Sideways, EAA, and Subcontract Request forms.
  • Award Administration: Part 3 - Audits and Audit Issues) 2/13/2008
    A presentation by a representative of the Internal Audit Office is included in this section, highlighting high risk areas and tips on how to protect the department.
  • Benefit Eligibility for Non Student Hourly Employees  6/4/2008
    The goal of this course is to train those who are responsible for hiring, monitoring and supervising non student temporary hourly employees of changes to the insurance benefit eligibility criteria.  Attendees will learn the new method in which non student temporary hourly employees may become benefit eligible and learn what resources are available to monitor their hours of work.
  • Budgeting for Sponsored Projects (Parts 1 and 2) 10/17/2007 (Part 1)        11/7/2007 (Part 2)
    The first session of this two-part class defines sponsored projects and explain how they differ from other activities.  Emphasis is be placed upon OMB Circulars A21 and A110, and direct costs vs. facilities and administrative costs.  The second portion focuses on building and reviewing budgets, estimating costs, cost categories, and types of budgets.
  • Business Policies, Procedures, and Records Retention 1/5/2007
    This workshop discusses how to use the Business Policies and Procedures Manual, how the manual is updated and its history. Records scheduling, records retention and state records requirements are also examined.
  • Cash Handling (Training Record accepted - click here for access)
    This class is required for those whose positions entail cash handling. At the completion of this course participants will have knowledge of the policies and procedures related to the handling of cash, the receipt and deposit of money, dealing with foreign currency, handling a "returned check, and identifying the proper procedures for safeguarding and securing monies, reimbursing a petty cash fund, and processing a refund.
  • Computer and Network Security Awareness 6/8/2007
    This course highlights best computer security practices - and most common mistakes - to help you protect yourself from hoaxes, spyware, phishing, ID theft, copyright issues, spam, viruses, social engineering. Appropriate WSU policies are also identified.
  • Dealing with Faculty Personnel Issues 10/18/2007
    This session examines the faculty disciplinary policy and the issue of research misconduct. Available resources on campus are identified with an emphasis placed upon keeping your Dean informed.
  • Dealing with Graduate Student Issues 1/24/2007
    This workshop addresses special concerns regarding graduate students. Graduate recruiting goals, program assessment, navigating program modifications and directing issues to the appropriate office are among the topics discussed.
  • Dealing with Staff Personnel Issues 2/2008
    Staff personnel issues such as performance evaluation, discipline, Bargaining Units and rules are discussed in this session.
  • Dealing with Undergraduate Student Issues 12/2007
    This session focuses on undergraduate student problems and issues. Distance Education, the Student Handbook, student disciplinary policies and handling student complaints are addressed.
  • Effort Certification and Cost Sharing 3/19/2008
    This workshop describes cost sharing, when it must be documented and reported, and why the federal government requires it. The effort certification form will be discussed in detail and tips for processing these forms at the departmental level will be provided.
  • Faculty Performance Reviews 11/8/2007
    Specific topics addressed in this session include pre-tenure reviews, the tenure and promotion process (procedures, timelines, standards) and the Chair's role.
  • Faculty Recruitment, Mentoring and Retention 10/4/2007
    In this session the faculty recruitment process and partner accommodation policy will be addressed, as well as professional leave and the retirement policy.
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) 12/20/2006
    This module provides supervisors with an overview of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and overtime standards within Washington State University. It explains who is covered under FLSA, outlines the Washington Administrative Code overtime standards, reviews meal and rest period requirements, provides guidance for hours worked during travel, highlights potential penalties for non-compliance, and demonstrates an overall overtime management for supervisors.
  • FERPA Roundtable Discussion 11/15/2007
    The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act is a Federal law that seeks to protect the rights of students and to insure the privacy of their education records. This law applies to Washington State University and online training is available through the Office of the Registrar. This roundtable discussion goes beyond the online training and encourages participants to ask the questions and explore the finer points of the law.
  • Ins and Outs of Contracts 12/12/2007
    This course covers issues that are unique to contracts including contract basics, WSU's standard research agreement, hot topics associated with contracts, and contract close-out.
  • Labor Relations 12/18/2006
    This class addresses the statutory provisions for collective bargaining, current Washington State laws and regulations associated with collective bargaining and civil service reform, the labor relations structure at WSU, bargaining unit employee rights, the role of stewards, and the grievance procedure.
  • Leave Policies and Practices 1/5/2007
    This class is designed to provide supervisors with an overview of leave, FMLA and shared leave policies, procedures and practices.
  • Life Cycle of a Sponsored Project 10/3/2007
    This course provides an overview of the grant process and highlights the roles of the principal investigator, the department administrator, the Office of Grant and Research Development and the Sponsored Project Finance Office.
  • New Employee Safety Orientation  3/14/2007
    Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) representatives describe various services, programs and resources available to all employees and students of Washington State University.
  • Position Control (Parts 1 and 2)     2/2008 (Part 1)             3/2008 (Part 2)
    This course is designed for those who want to gain a basic understanding of position control.  The first section provides an overview of how HEPPS is designed, where to find necessary position information in HEPPS, how forms are routed and an overview of position control definitions and functions.  The second section extends your knowledge of position control through more in-depth discussion and application of position control policies and procedures, including more challenging Position Action forms and more hands-on exercises.
  • Proposal Submission, Review, and Acceptance 11/29/2006
    This workshop provides insight into the proposal submission process including application kits and physical requirements of proposals along with the internal policies and procedures of the Office of Grant and Research Development.
  • Public Records and Records Requests 1/5/2007
    This course is designed to acquaint managers with the basics of the Public Records Law, the types of records that are public and must be produced, the new WSU policy relating to public records, the process for responding thereto and the university Public Records Officer.
  • Purchasing Card Training for Administrators and Fiscal Managers (Training Record accepted - click here for access)
    This training is designed to assist administrators and "Approving Officials" in the management of their departmental Purchasing Cards. If you are a supervisor, manager, director or administrator in a department using the WSU Purchasing Card, this training is for you. It has been specifically designed for those people responsible for departmental and fiscal supervision. Completion of this module does NOT qualify you as a card holder. To qualify for a card, you must attend the live two hour Purchasing Card Training offered monthly through HRS.
  • Reasonable Accommodation 1/3/2007
    This course examines WSU's Reasonable Accommodation process for employees and explores ways supervisors can avoid pitfalls when managing the disabled workers.
  • Research Compliance Overview 4/16/2008
    This class provides an overview of the major regulations that affect research.  Topics to be addressed include human subjects, biological materials, animals, conflicts of interest, export controls and others.  The Presidential Committees that oversee these areas of research will also be discussed.
  • Roles and Responsibilities of the Supervisor 1/5/2007
    This course provides an overview of the multiple roles and legal responsibilities of the supervisor.  Additionally, the four primary functions of the supervisor are addressed along with the supervisor's responsibilities to the organization and to the employees.
  • Space Survey Training 2/20/2008
    This training is to assist with the 2008 space survey with room type and function distinctions.
    The distinctions amongst the various Functions are discussed, and how to approach a percentage of time analysis of the use of a room.
  • State Ethics Law and Whistleblower Act for Supervisors 1/4/2007
    Beginning with an overview of the State Ethics Law and the Whistle-blower Act, this class features issues and discussion of particular interest to supervisors and managers.  The Ethics in Public Service requirements found in RCW 42.52 and WAC 292 are examined, as well as the use of state resources, conflicts of interest, receipt of gifts and confidential information.
  • Supervisor as Motivator 2/9/2007
    This class provides an overview of the determinants of behavior and the different theories of motivation, including a discussion on the importance of recognizing and rewarding employees.
  • Supervisor as Performance Manager: Corrective Action and Discipline 12/19/2006
    The objectives of this module are to explain the value of positive and progressive discipline; to recognize how to use discipline to correct improper employee behavior; and to learn how to apply discipline consistently, fairly and impartially.
  • Supervisor as Performance Manager: Developing and Conducting Annual Reviews 1/2/2007
    This session addresses the purpose, value and the regulatory aspects of regular performance evaluations, how to use the forms and processes involved in performance evaluation and how to assess employee development needs.
  • Supervisor as Performance Manager: Developing Effective Job Descriptions and Performance Expectations 12/18/2006
    The first two building blocks of performance management - job descriptions and job expectations - are examined in this presentation.  The concept of a job expectation, the requirements of a well-written expectation and how to group job expectations for use in performance evaluations and annual reviews are explained.
  • Supervisor as Safety Manager  3/14/2007
    This supervisory training course focuses on the new employee safety checklist, the Supervisors' Safety Manual, WSU's Accident Prevention Program and the supervisor's roles in performing inspections and reporting and investigating accidents.
  • Tenure and Promotion 4/8/2008
    This workshop answers questions about all aspects of faculty performance reviews and is designed for any faculty member who has an interest in the issues of tenure and promotion, particularly those who are just beginning their careers at WSU or who will come up for an important evaluation soon.  
  • Tips on Improving Teaching and Advising 12/13/2007
    This informal and interactive session includes discussion of the Guide for Elevating Performance. The Guide provides a tool to assess and improve performance. Also included is information on advising and a preview of some new tools for students and faculty that will be available beginning spring 2008 semester.
  • Understanding Diversity, Ethics and Workplace Harassment 11/29/2007
    The Strategic Plan brought forward by the Office of the Vice President for Equity and Diversity is addressed in this closing session. WSU's Workplace Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Policy will be reviewed, as well as the State Ethics Law with an emphasis upon the appropriate use of resources and conflicts of interest.
  • Understanding Facilities and Administration Costs 4/2/2008
    This course provides insight into the purpose and use of facilities and administrative costs charged to sponsored projects. It address the importance of collecting those costs and Washington State University’s policy on exceptions to sponsors.
  • University Budgets - Management and Processes 4/5/2007
    This session acquaints department chairs and directors with University budgets and provides insight into managing departmental and unit budgets.
  • University Overview 9/13/2007
    This workshop provides an overview of the University structure and academic policies. Topics include University Organization, WSU's Strategic Plan, the Faculty Senate, the Academic Plan, the Faculty Manual and acquiring a mentor.
  • Valuing and Promoting Diversity  3/15/2007
    This class provides an overview of the Strategic Plan of the Office of Vice President for Equity and Diversity.
  • WA State Destination-Based Sales Tax Changes 4/22/2008
    Effective July 1, 2008, the State of Washington will change how sales tax will be calculated.  These changes affect both sellers and buyers.  This course describes the sweeping changes.
  • Workers' Compensation and Return to Work 3/13/2007
    This module provides an overview of workers' compensation and its benefits, covering procedures to follow when an employee is injured on the job, what the supervisor's role entails and the methods used to return an employee to work.
  • Workplace Issues and Concerns 1/3/2007
    This course provides resources and a general overview of  to assist you with a general overview of laws, policies and procedures to assist you with workplace issues and concerns at Washington State University.  Policies discussed include: Workplace Violence, Domestic Violence and Alcohol and Drug.
