Department Chairs and Directors Workshops

The Department Chairs and Directors Training Workshops are designed to address the needs of current and experienced chairs, faculty and administrators of academic units. 

Human Resource Services collaborates with the Office of the Provost to coordinate this annual series addressing such topics as faculty performance reviews, personnel issues, recruitment, leadership and communication.

Leadership and Communication

This course provides a framework through which participants can: assess personal leadership styles; learn how differences in leadership styles affect group process and morale; learn about different communication styles, rapport building, active listening, group and written communication; learn how to use WSU's Strategic Plan as a backdrop; and convey messages that are clear and compelling.

Washington State University's Strategic Plan brought forward by the Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity, Office of the Vice President is addressed in this course. WSU's Workplace Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Policy is also reviewed, as well as the State Ethics Law with an emphasis upon the appropriate use of resources and conflicts of interest.

University Budgets - Management and Processes

This workshop blends two budgetary perspectives into a single conversation.  It begins with a focus on WSU's planning and budgeting process, including the identification of sources, the uses of funds and state level budgeting policies and process.  Then information and insight into successfully managing departmental and unit budgets is incorporated into the discussion.
